Consequently, they are in a dilemma and wish to change classes. Although most teachers and professionals recommend maintaining consistency in coursework, it is better to change classes at the outset if you feel that the subject you’ve chosen is not your cup of tea.  

The good news is you can also benefit by switching classes, especially if you find it difficult to cope with the demands of the selected subjects. So, if you are thinking about it, we will be exploring some good reasons to switch classes in high school and how you can benefit from this choice.

When to Switch Classes?

The best time to switch classes is at the beginning of the new semester. This ensures that you do not miss out on too many classes and can easily catch up. 

Navigating high school: Good reasons to switch classes

If you are considering swapping classes but don’t think it is a good idea, here are some reasons to convince you otherwise: 

1. For Academic Growth

One of the most compelling reasons students consider changing classes is the pursuit of academic excellence. 

As a student, you may find yourself in classes that do not nurture your critical faculties or feel challenging enough. Conversely, you may be in classes that feel too overwhelming and you are unable to handle the academic pressure. Both these things hinder academic growth and the best way out is to switch classes and choose something that is more in line with your potential and areas of interest. 

Finding the right class will give you the opportunity to challenge yourself intellectually. For instance, students who do really well in the standard science courses may benefit from switching to an advanced placement (AP) class that offers a university-level curriculum.

How to switch classes?

While there can be several reasons to switch classes, it is important to go about it the right way and not make rash decisions. Here are some ways you can approach changing classes. 

1. Speak with your parents

As a first step, inform your parent/guardian about your decision and the difficulty you are facing. They will be able to guide you better and together, you can come up with a plan that allows for seamless transition between classes. 

2. Consult your teachers 

You can discuss your concerns with a particular class with your teacher. Sometimes, if you are finding it difficult to follow a curriculum, teachers may be willing to make an adjustment or give you extra materials after class. 

Besides, you can consult them if you wish to switch classes and they will guide you with the best possible solution. 

3. Get in touch with school counselors

If you do not feel comfortable discussing your problems with your teachers or parents, consider getting in touch with the school counselor. Guidance counselors come with years of experience and can effectively handle teacher-student conflict. They will listen to your problems, provide effective solutions, and help you through the process. 

4. Academic considerations

Understand that changing a class will come with its set of challenges. You will have to start afresh and catch up with whatever is being taught. The good news is there are alternative paths to achieving high school equivalency without needing to complete two years of high school. There are several prominent options in the United States such as GED, TASC, HiSET, and CHSPE.

Given the fact that there are so many options, students are often confused about which test would be the best for them. In this guide, we’ll delve into the differences and similarities between two such equivalency exams: TASC and GED, to help you make an informed decision about which test suits your goals. 

What is TASC?

The TASC exam, which is also known as Test Assessing Secondary Completion, was a high school equivalency test in the United States. Initially, it was designed as an alternative to prominent equivalency tests such as GED (General Educational Development) for individuals who did not complete high school but wish to earn an equivalent credential.

This test was developed by McGraw Hill Education and administered by Data Recognition Corporation. It was adopted by various states such as New York in 2014 as a way to incorporate the changes in the education system and make the exam more accessible to a large number of students. 

TASC tests the student’s skills and knowledge in subjects such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Since December 2021, TASC has been discontinued and people are choosing various other alternatives for the same. 

What is a GED?

The GED is an acronym for General Educational Development, a high school equivalency test by the American Council on Education (ACE). The program was created in 1942 to provide military veterans returning from World War an opportunity to display their academic skills and knowledge. The GED test covers subjects like mathematics, language arts, social studies, and science.

Over the years, the GED test has undergone significant revisions to ensure it remains a reliable measure to determine whether the test-takers have high school-level knowledge. A significant revision occurred in 2014 when the GED test became more rigorous to assess a student’s knowledge of fundamental concepts and their college and career readiness. 

TASC versus GED: All you need to know

In this section, we will look at the key differences that exist between TASC and GED. 

1. Syllabus

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing between the TASC and GED is the test content. Although both subjects cover four core areas: reasoning through language arts mathematics, science, and social studies, their approach to questioning differs.

TASC: The TASC assesses critical thinking and problem-solving skills and is fairly similar to GED. It was divided into five subsets. Here’s a breakdown of the syllabus:

• Mathematics: algebra, functions, numbers, statistics, probability, geometry
• Science: life science, earth science, space science, physical science 
• Social studies: history, civics, geography, economics
• Reading: reading and answering questions pertaining to informational texts, seminal foundational texts, and literary texts.
• Writing: The writing section involves essay writing. 

GED: The GED has rigorous content, which is designed with the test-taker’s educational and career prospects in mind.

• Reasoning through language arts (RLA): reading comprehension, essay writing, grammar.
• Mathematics: basic arithmetic, algebra, graphs, and geometry.
• Science: life science, earth science, space science, physical science
• Social studies: history, civics, geography, and economics

2. Format

The format of the TASC and GED tests was another crucial consideration when making a choice.

TASC: The TASC was administered in both paper-based and computer-based formats. The emphasis was on promoting digital literacy so computer-based formats were encouraged. The exam took around 8 hours to complete and you can spread it out over a few days, taking up one subset at a time. 

GED: GED is an entirely computer-based exam. It takes around 7 hours and 45 minutes to complete and you do not have to give it at one stretch but have the luxury of spreading it out over a few days. 

3. Marks

Understanding the marking system followed by the TASC and GED tests is important to gauge your performance. 

TASC: the TASC used a scale of 300-800 points for each subject area. You need a minimum of 500 points to pass each subset. 

GED: The GED uses a scoring scale of 100-200 points for each subject test. To pass each subject test, you generally need to score at least 145. However, if you get above 175 points in each subject, you get a GED college-ready plus credit score. 

4. Recognition

One of the most important reasons people pursue high school equivalency tests such as TASC and GED is to improve their career and educational prospects. 

TASC: The TASC was recognized by various states across the United States such as Indiana and New York, where it was chosen as an alternative to GED. However, since it has been discontinued, it is no longer recognized by any state. 

If you have already given TASC. your scores will be converted to GED or HiSET. 

GED: The GED is one of the most widely accepted credentials by colleges, universities, and employers across the United States. 

5. Acceptance

The GED is now one of the most widely accepted high school equivalency exams alongside HiSET. There are various coaching centers that train students to pass this exam, but a large number of students choose to prepare for it at home. 

TASC was never as widely accepted as GED. Before it was discontinued in 2021, it was only recognized by limited states such as New York, Ohio, West Virginia, Mississippi, Indiana, and Nevada among others. 

6. Passing Criteria 

To earn your high school equivalency credential, you must meet the passing criteria set by the TASC or GED testing program. This is determined by the score you achieve out of the overall score. 

TASC: For this exam, you need to score a minimum of 500 points in each subject. The score ranged from a scale of 300 to 800. You had to score a minimum of 2 out of 8 for the essay. For the paper-based format, the scores took up to 10 days but for the computerized form, it is available instantly. 

GED: You need to score at least 145 out of the overall score of 200 in each subject to pass the test. The scores for GED are usually available within a few hours since it is a computerized exam. 

Why was TASC discontinued?

The TASC exam was discontinued because Data Recognition Corporation withdrew its support. The states that facilitated the exam and accepted the TASC scores were duly notified. Besides, students were given full assistance in converting their TASC scores into GED or HiSET, depending on the state they come from. 

Conclusion

There is no dearth of high school equivalency exams but it is important to choose one that aligns with your career goals and educational prospects. You no longer have TASC as an option but can choose between GED and HiSET. To make an informed choice, do a comparative analysis between the two keeping in mind your aspirations, location, and personal preference.

For instance, GED is known to have an easier math portion than HiSET and HiSET has a more comprehensive language portion. So, take your time to do thorough research and consider reaching out to people who have taken the exam. In this comprehensive guide, we will take you through the major differences between CHSPE and GED so that you can make the right choice between the two depending on your goals and situation.

What is CHSPE?

CHSPE stands for the California High School Proficiency Examination, a test designed by California law. It gives students who are at least 16 years old and have completed the 10th grade the opportunity to earn a high school diploma equivalent.

The test assesses the student’s academic proficiency and allows them to exit the traditional high school system. This is a useful option for residents who wish to enter the workforce early or pursue unique educational opportunities. 

The syllabus covers language arts and mathematics. Unlike other high school equivalency tests like GED or HiSET, CHSPE is specifically for California residents.

What is a GED?

GED is the acronym for General Educational Department. It was developed by the American Council on Education in 1942 in collaboration with the US Military. The initial goal was to help war veterans to complete their high school but it has today become a prominent high school equivalent diploma and is widely recognized by the states in the US. 

The program is specifically designed for students who fail to complete their high school through conventional means but want to obtain a diploma nonetheless. The test consists of four parts: mathematics, science, social studies, and reasoning through language arts. 

CHSPE Vs. GED: Which one is best for you?

There are certain differences between CHSPE and GED. Let us learn more about this. 

1. Syllabus

CHSPE and GED differ in terms of the test content. While the purpose of both is to assess academic knowledge, their approach differs. 

CHSPE: The CHSPE covers two subject areas: mathematics and language arts. The mathematics portion includes various math topics like arithmetic, geometry, probability, algebra, and statistics. This part consists of 50 MCQs. The language arts portion is divided into two subsets: reading and language 

1. Reading: The purpose of this section is to determine how well students can analyze and interpret written texts. In addition, it assesses their vocabulary skills. You will get 84 questions in this subset. 
2. Language: This section consists of 48 MCQs in addition to a writing assignment. The purpose of this test is to determine whether you have cohesive knowledge of language and how well you can present relevant information in a written format while following basic principles of the language.

GED: The GED test consists of four subsections with the focus of testing the student’s knowledge in different subjects. The subsets are as follows:

1. Reasoning through Language Arts: This section tests your essay writing and reading comprehension skills. The test is divided into three parts and you have to write an extended response. 
2. Mathematics: This section covers algebraic equations, basic math, quantitative problems, and so on. The test is subdivided into two parts and you are allowed to use a calculator for part two. 
3. Science: The science section focuses on space, life, physical science, and earth science (also classified as biology, physics, astronomy, and space). You will be allowed a calculator for solving science-based numbers and graphs. 
4. Social Studies: This section deals with your knowledge of geography, economics, history, and civics, particularly pertaining to the United States. You are allowed to use a calculator as you have to handle some calculations and graphs. 

2. Eligibility

The next difference between the two tests arises in terms of the student’s eligibility to appear for them. 

CHSPE: To take the CHSPE exam, the student must be at least 16 years old and must have enrolled and completed the 10th grade. Since this test is mostly meant for California residents, students from other states may only take the test if they demonstrate a connection to California. 

GED: The GED test is widely available in the United States and the eligibility criteria differ from state to state. You need to be 16 years old to take the GED and in most cases, you shouldn’t be enrolled in a high school. You can go directly to college at 16 after passing GED, but there are certain conditions you have to fulfill.

Please note – although the minimum age for taking a GED is 16, some states in the USA such as Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Nevada need you to be 18+. To know what your state requirements are, it is best to go through the GED website.

3. Test Structure

The format of CHSPE and GED differs and you should prepare for the exams keeping the format in mind. 

CHSPE: The CHSPE exam follows a paper-based format. For the language arts portion, you get MCQs and an essay prompt. For the mathematics section, you only get MCQs. 

GED: The GED exam is offered in a computer-based format (it used to be computer-based and paper-based earlier but is now entirely computerized), depending on the regulations of the state and the testing center. You get MCQs, drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blanks, etc. in addition to one extended response. 

4. Time 

The time taken for CHSPE and GED also differs, with GED taking much longer. The CHSPE takes 3.5 hours but the GED has a time limit of 7 hours and 45 minutes. 

5. Recognition

The purpose of pursuing a high school equivalency certificate is to be recognized as a high school graduate by colleges and potential employers. 

CHSPE: The CHSPE is mainly recognized and accepted in the state of California. Residents who have given this test will be recognized as high school passouts by colleges and employers within the state. But, do other states recognize this exam? Not so much; its recognition is limited outside of the state. 

GED: The GED test is one of the most widely recognized and accepted tests across the United States. It is accepted by universities, the military, and potential employers as proof of high school equivalency. If you are planning to pursue higher studies or a career in different states, taking the GED is the safest route. 

6. Cost

CHSPE: The CHSPE test costs around $130. If you have to sit for a retake, you will be required to pay the full price. 

GED: The GED test costs vary from state to state. It is completely free in New York (available to residents of the state only) but can go up to $150 in other states. The cost is usually around $36 to $40 per subject. In addition, the retake fees are discounted. 

7. Marks

CHSPE: The scoring system for CHSPE ranges from 250 to 450 points and you need to get a minimum of 350 points for the mathematics portion to pass in the exam. For the language arts portion, you should get at least 2.5 out of 5 for the writing assignment and 365 in the MCQ section. If you get 350 points in the MCQ section, you should get 3 out of 5 for the writing assignment.

GED: You need to get a minimum score of 145 out of 200 in each of the four subjects to pass in the GED exam. If you get a score of 175 or above, you get a college-ready certificate plus credit.

Please Note: You should start your preparation at least 3 months before the exam, although a lot of students start a month before. It is important to give yourself the time to learn at a normal pace, revise, and practice continuously. 

Step 1: Understand the Test

Before you dive head first into the preparation, make sure to have a clear understanding of what the GED test entails. It consists of four subjects:

• Science
• Mathematics
• Social Studies
• Language Arts

The purpose of dividing this test into subsets is to assess whether students have comprehensive knowledge and skills to handle different subjects taught at the high school level. Before you start preparing for GED, make sure to familiarize yourself with the structure of the test as well as other important details that will serve as a roadmap in your prep journey.

The test is a computer-based one with options such as MCQs, fill-in-the-blanks, drag-and-drop clicks, and so on. Besides, it usually takes 7 hours and 45 minutes to complete this test. You have to take the test at an assigned center either in one go or across multiple visits. In addition, please note that each paper carries 200 marks. 

Once you have gathered all the information about the number of questions, scoring criteria, time limit, and mode of examination, it is time to move on to the next step. 

Step 2: Know the Syllabus

Before you can move on to anything, it is crucial that you have a comprehensive idea of the syllabus. You need to know what to prepare before you can start preparing. Let us break down the syllabus for you. 

1. Reasoning through Language Arts

The Reasoning through Language Arts portion consists of MCQs that take around 150 minutes to complete. The topics covered are grammar and language, reading for meaning, and writing. 

The goal is to analyze your comprehension and writing skills, so expect a lot of passages for reading, based on which you will be given MCQs. You also have a section that requires you to give an extended response which usually takes around 45 minutes to complete. 

2. Mathematics

The mathematical portion of GED is easier in comparison to some other high school equivalency exams such as HiSET. It consists of basic math, geometry, algebra, and graphs. The subset is divided into two parts and the questions range from MCQs, drag and drop, and fill-in-the-blanks to select an area. You get 115 minutes to handle this portion. 

3. Social Studies

The social studies portion comprises analysis of historical events, reading for meaning, and the use of numerical and graphs for interpreting data pertaining to social studies. The subjects covered are geography, history, civics, and economics. The duration of this paper is 70 minutes. 

4. Science 

The science section of the test covers biology, physics, astronomy, and space. You will be tested on your ability to comprehend scientific concepts, understand and prepare scientific experiments, solve scientific numerics and graphs, and so on. You get 90 minutes to handle this section of the paper. 

Step 3: Set Proper Goals

Once you have set goals and gathered study materials, it is time to create a study plan. You may want to bring out your colored pens and sticky notes for this one as color coding helps you stay organized and improves comprehension. You may also make use of smart goal worksheets.

Allocate 5 to 8 hours per day to studying and set study goals for each week. Allocate time slots for each subset and focus on studying and solving question papers. However, remember to give yourself a break once or twice a week to make room for rest and rejuvenation.

How to prepare for test day?

We understand there may be a lot of nervousness and stress on the test day. However, it is important to keep your calm, sleep well the night before, and show up to the test center on time.

Carry your calculator, admit card, and all the other important things. While solving the questions, stay mindful of the time and do not waste unnecessary time trying to solve questions whose answers you do not know. It is essential that you stay calm, focused, and confident. 

How long do the results take?

The time it takes for the GED test results to be declared varies depending on the state and the center where you took the test. Usually, students get their results within a few hours but sometimes, it may take up to a few weeks. 

The official score report for the test will either be sent to you via email or you can access it through the online portal. You will get individual scores for each subset, with 145 being the pass mark. However, if you score between 175 to 200, you get a college-ready certificate as well as a credit score.
